Miami to get new Performing Arts
Center...Maybe...
After twenty-one years, it looks like the Performing Arts
Center of Greater Miami might actually get built. In December, Miami-Dade
County Commission approved the $255 million contract, after numerous debates
and escalating costs.
The Center is slated to open in the fall of 2004, and it will be the new home
of the Concert Association of Florida, the Florida Philharmonic, Florida Grand
Opera, Miami City Ballet, and the New World Symphony. It will contain a
2480-seat opera-ballet theater and a 2200-seat concert hall, designed by
architect Cesar Pelli and fine-tuned by acoustician Russell Johnson. It will
be built on land donated by Sears and Knight-Ridder on Biscayne Boulevard
north of I-95.
02/01/01 Recording Rap
The recording department had a very strong year last year.
The total of Electronic Media scale wages on AFM recording contracts so far is
$1,059,000.00. I should have final figures by the end of March and will update
everyone in the next newsletter. Again, I thank all musicians for calling me
to get contracts filed. Our Local has come a long way from 1997 when I first
started. (the total was $350,000 at that time). Keep up the good work!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We need some of your time and a 34¢ stamp
The theater musicians of Local 655 have been on strike against Broadway theatrical presenter SFX since the end of November. SFX is the company that brings in such Broadway shows as Cabaret, Fosse, & Fiddler On The Roof. We have been attempting to get their wages increased to the industry standards that we have fallen significantly behind.
