Philadelphia printers conduct first successful strike for increased wages.

First worker revolt: B&O Railroad cuts wages 10% and workers walk off job; federal troops break strike but start national revolt.

AFM formed

Norris-LaGuardia Act: limits employers’ injunctions in labor disputes.

Fair Labor Standards Act: creates laws regarding minimum wages and 40-hour work week.

AFL and CIO merge.

06/01/01 Herb Wasserman: A Different Drummer

Everybody is a drummer. Either a future drummer ("I just bought a drum set for my cellar") or a past drummer ("playing drums put me through law school"). If they don’t play air guitar, today’s kids play air drums...It’s hard to get respect even though some big people have told me how they envy me. I just remind them of the salary differential and they go back to reality.

06/01/01 Recording Rap

The recording department has been busy the past few months with artists Cristian Castro, Shakira, Mandy Moore, Brandy, Enrique Iglesias, and Jon Secada working on new projects. During the past two weeks I attended a Puff Daddy session and saw the beginning of the Michael Jackson session with 45 musicians. Michael later came in and conducted one song. James Judd and the Florida Philharmonic have also recorded a CD with selections of Leonard Bernstein’s works.

September is right around the corner, about a block and a half past your vacation, and we have our own bi-annual nominations meeting, with the election to follow in November. Personally, I have made no decision yet, although I have some potential opportunities I’m looking at. I urge you to get involved. Your Local is only as good as you make it.
