12/03/05 Local Mourns Loss of Simon Salz, 50
Local Mourns Loss of Simon Salz, 50Simon Salz, a Local 655 member since 1976, has been called “the finest jazz guitarist in South Florida” and had performed with jazz great such as Ira Sullivan, Dick Hyman, Eddie Higgins, Louie Bellson, Stan Getz, Keith Jarret, Pete Minger, and Monty Alexander. He was the founder of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band. Salz was also a noted educator who wrote instructional manuals and served as co-director of the Young Musicians Camp at the University of Miami. He taught music at Florida Atlantic University, Miami Dade College, and New World School of Arts. The family has requested that anyone who would like to offer a living
memorial to Simon, rather than sending flowers, is encouraged to make a donation
to the University of Miami Young Musician’s Camp, which was founded by Simon and
wife Sarah. By doing this you will enable them to pass along Simon’s legacy to
the next generation in a very real and meaningful way to students that would not
otherwise be able to attend. |
