Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) has introduced the Independent Contractor Proper Classification Act of 2007 to address misclassification of employees as self-employed independent contractors. The bill would close tax loopholes and would give the government new enforcement powers against employers. Employers that misclassify employees often have an advantage over other employers in industries such as the construction industry because they can save money by avoiding paying workers compensation and other taxes and put the burden of paying payroll taxes on the individual.

Yet again, inflation in south Florida far exceeded the national average. For July and August 2007, inflation in south Florida was at a 3.7 percent annual rate, compared to a national rate of 2 percent. The biggest increases are from food and from rent, which jumped 7.4 percent.
