02/01/08 Scholarships for Students Available

South Florida Musicians Association and the Music Performance Fund are offering two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who will be majoring in Instrumental Music, Music Education, Composition, or Sound Recording / Industry Studies at an accredited college or university. Student must be actively involved in music, playing in school bands, community orchestras, etc.

Agenda: Proposed Amendments to the Bylaws

Dan Cherskov from Adcahb, the largest contracting agency for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Florida, will also offer a short presentation on Blue Cross/ Blue Shield Health products. Areas of discussion will include regulatory, pricing and claims issues within the industry. Mr. Cherskov will then take questions from those who are interested and offer plan information to members on an individual basis.

02/01/08 Industry and Local News

The Carnival Center is now the Adrienne Arsht Center. Arsht, former chairman of Totalbank, has pledged $30 million for naming rights. $13 million this year will be used to fund $4 million in programming and to pay off a loan. An additional $7 million will be donated next year, and the remaining $10 million in 2010. Arsht had previously worked with Center CEO Lawrence Wilker at the Kennedy Center. Carnival Center has agreed to relinquish naming rights for the center in return for a reduction in its pledged donation from $20 million to $10 million, as well as naming rights to the studio theater, the Art Deco tower, and the pedestrian bridge.
