06/01/11 Ed Carhart, 84

Ed, a member of South Florida Musicians Association from 1961 to 2006, was an accomplished jazz, big band, and symphony musician. His favorite stories were of Valley Forge Military Academy, Julliard, Carhart Construction, his Army service, hydroplane racing championship, music and family. He is survived by daughter Leslie; sons C.E. "Chip" Jr. and Christopher; step-mother Jeanette; and sister-in-law Jane (James) Anderson, Predeceased by his wife Barbara, and daughter Kyle. A celebration of life is intended at a future date. 06/01/11 That Union Thing

1400 Broward teachers have been let go due to budget cuts. Half of the teachers were hired on one-year agreements using one-time funds, and the other half were regular first- and second-year teachers. More teachers are expected to be laid off later this summer.

06/01/11 Local and Industry News

The Dillard Jazz Ensemble has taken first place in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Competition. Both the Dillard ensemble and an ensemble from the New World School of the Arts were able to take part in the competition against thirteen other school jazz bands in part due to $30,000 in financial help from the Marlins Community Foundation.
