British-born singer Carole Taran, a South Florida Musicians Association member since 1956, has passed away. Taran was nominated for a Grammy and won a Carbonell Award for best female cabaret performer. She regularly performed at the Diplomat Hotel and the Fontainebleau, sang the national anthem at Joe Robbie Stadium during the Miami Dolphins' 1972 undefeated season, and opened for such greats as Tom Jones, Bob Hope, and Jack Benny.
In the 1960's the Jazz scene was in its last zenith. In New York, Chicago Los Angeles, and even smaller cities, jazz was experiencing its last hurrah. Miami was no exception. We were playing the hotel circuit on Miami Beach, but when we really wanted to get into the music of Ellington, Basie, Mingus, Miles and Monk we headed to Overtown after hours.
