10/16/15 Warning to Musicians Contacted By South Florida Symphony

Please be advised that South Florida Musicians Association is strongly discouraging musicians from accepting employment with the South Florida Symphony (formerly Key West Symphony). Musicians who performed for the Symphony in January, February, March, and April 2015 have yet to be paid for any of their services. Additionally, the Symphony has a history of having difficulty paying musicians in a timely manner. Musicians have had to wait from eight months to up to two years to be paid for concerts performed in 2010, 2013, and 2014. According to the Symphony's most recent tax return, the Symphony has liabilities of nearly $380,000 on an annual budget of only $650,000. The Symphony is not party to a union contract, and should you chose to perform and fail to be paid, your only recourse would be to pursue collections through small claims court or under county wage theft ordinances. Our recommendation is that you avoid placing yourself in such a position.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact South Florida Musicians Association.
