Last Month at the Local

Last month we moved the office slightly further north.

The new office is near Commercial Boulevard and US1, still in Fort Lauderdale, in the Pro-Am office plaza. The owners of the building have begun a major renovation of the building, which dates from 1968-73. Over the next few months, they will completely overhaul the exterior of the building and begin modernizing the interior. Feel free to visit us in the new location, but please excuse the construction dust.

We were also asked about sexual harassment in the workplace. In addition to unwanted sexual advances, harassment can include verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature or even offensive remarks about a person's sex...anything that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. The harasser can be a supervisor, a co-worker, or even a client or customer. Employers are required under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide a safe workplace and may be liable if a supervisor was involved, or if the employer was aware of harassment and failed to take corrective action. If you are a victim of harassment, it is important to make notes of what happened, including time and place, what was said and done, and names of witnesses. If you feel comfortable talking to the harasser, you should let them know that their actions bother you and ask them to stop. You should also notify your employer...they are required to take corrective action and can be liable if they don't. Lastly, you can also file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but please note that the EEOC requires charges to be filed within 180 days of the incident. By coming forward, you can help prevent others becoming victims as well.
