The airline recently announced plans to introduce regional jets operated by regional carriers at airline hubs. United, which recently merged with Continental Airlines, is currently in negotiations with pilots to create a joint collective bargaining agreement covering both United pilots and Continental pilots.
United Teachers of Dade has declared an impasse in negotiations with the Miami-Dade School Board. The collective bargaining agreement, which runs through 2012, contains provisions to annually negotiate salaries to keep them aligned with the economy. The school board has declined the union's proposal for raises, instead offering a one-time bonus.
Senate Republicans have blocked a measure that would have allowed public safety workers, including police and firefighters, the right to collectively bargain over wages and working conditions. Nearly 30 states already have laws granting this right, and the federal measure would have granted the same rights to public safety workers in the remaining states.
National Nurses United has won all six of the elections held in Florida to determine their right to collectively bargain on behalf of nurses. Nurses at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Largo Medical Center in Largo, Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, and Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee all voted in favor of union representation. The nurses wish to speak with one voice to improve working conditions for all nurses, according to a spokesperson.
