That Union Thing

After decades of trying, SAG and AFTRA have finally merged into one union representing roughly 150,000 actors, broadcasters, and others in the entertainment and media industry.

More than 80 percent of those members voting in each union were in favor of the merger, significantly more than the 60 percent required for approval.

800 food service workers at Marlins Park have voted for union representation through UNITE HERE. The workers decided that only by working together can they make sure they have access to fair wages, job security, and respect on the job.

A Miami-Dade circuit court has ruled that the county's wage theft ordinance is a "a reasonable exercise of government authority" and a "proper exercise of its police powers." The Florida Retail Federation challenged the ordinance, which makes it easier for workers to collect unpaid wages. The Florida Retail Federation has not yet decided whether to appeal.

About 175 south Florida bridge tenders at ISS Facilities Services are now represented by International Union of Operating Engineers Local 487. Workers, many of whom are senior citizens, had not had a raise in the five years before organizing, and they were concerned about lack of respect from their supervisors.
