05/01/09 More Musicians Lose FGO Jobs

I got an e-mail and a phone call this week from a principal string player in this season's Florida Grand Opera replacement orchestra. He took the job despite our warnings about lack of job security at FGO. He assumed that he was secure enough to not have to worry about being fired. Apparently he was wrong.

02/01/08 FedEx Fined for Misclassifying Employees as Independent Contractors

The Internal Revenue Service has fined FedEx $319 million for misclassifying employees as Independent Contractors. For years, FedEx has treated its drivers at FedEx Ground as Independent Contractors despite several rulings that found the drivers to be employees of FedEx.

01/01/08 David and Goliath in Daytona

The Federal Communications Commission is deciding whether it should ease limits on how many media outlets a company can own in one market, but the fact is  most Americans are against media consolidation. A survey by the Media and Democracy Coalition found that 57 percent were against a company owning a newspaper and a TV station in the same market, and 70 percent thought that media consolidation was a problem.
