Starbucks Managers Sue for OT
Managers at Starbucks locations in Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach have filed a lawsuit seeking class-action status for Starbucks managers who have worked more than 40 hours a week. The managers claim that little of their time is spent on managerial tasks and that Starbucks is violating federal law by denying them overtime pay.

Bruno Aprea has been appointed Artistic Director of the Palm Beach Opera.
After conducting a national search in consultation with the Players’ Conferences, the American Federation of Musicians has appointed Laura Brownell as Director of Symphonic Services. The position of Director became vacant when former Director Janice Galassi was appointed Director of Organizing and Education for the AFM. Prior to her appointment, Brownell had served many years in Symphonic Services with the AFM Canadian Office.

It’s been a busy time since my appointment as Electronic Media Representative. We’ve been working hard to prepare this Local’s Recording Department for some important new initiatives. While dodging hurricanes and getting oriented in my new position, I also received the honor of being elected Vice-President. I look forward to the challenge of serving the talented musicians of this unique local.

Local 655 to Promote Members at Trade Shows
South Florida Musicians Association, Local 655 AFM will be promoting its
musician members at Beautiful Bride 2004 and at the Palm Beach Party Expo. The
Palm Beach Party Expo, to be held August 22 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel,
will give attendees tools, from locations to catering to entertainment, to help
them implement memorable events and great parties. Beautiful Bride 2004
will be held August 30 at the Palm Beach Marriott; the previous
Beautiful Bride attracted over 500 guests looking for professionals to help plan
their weddings. Both events are excellent ways for South Florida Musicians to
reach the live-music buying consumer. "Attending these two ClearChannel
events is the first step of a larger plan to promote the South Florida Musicians
to the private and corporate entertainment buying market. In short, we are
proactively pursuing gigs for our members," says Local 655 President Cliff
Walker.

Let me first state that I appreciate all work in our area, Union and non-Union. I prefer Union, but I’m happiest when musicians are working.
