The Business of Music

Read any good books lately? A lot of things have been written about the music business; here is one we can call "old reliable": Music Business Handbook & Career Guide by David Baskerville, Ph.D. It covers everything from songwriting and publishing to promotion and merchandising. A well-written, time-tested (in its fifth edition), no-nonsense book, it provides a very good general overview of the music business without being dry reading.

Need ideas on dealing with agents, managers, or attorneys? Or licensing or affiliation with organizations such as ASCAP or BMI? This book is a good place to start.

Are you a musician involved in live performance? There are chapters devoted to finding cosponsors and promoting your gigs. To say nothing of the recording industry: advice for finding recording studios and negotiating with recording engineers can be found here, as well as advice on marketing.

Not only does it address electronic media as well as live performance, this book also covers other aspects of the business such as publishing and management. For a comprehensive look at the music business written in laymen’s terms, you cannot beat this ASCAP Award-winning book.
