President's Report

Palm Beach Opera…

… Negotiations have gotten underway with the Palm Beach Opera and we’ve had two very friendly and informative days with management. We expect to get back together during the end of June, and with more hard work, good preparation and a little luck thrown in, hopefully we’ll be able to finalize an agreement very soon. In addition, we’ve received authorization from the Federation for a membership drive in conjunction with the PBO negotiations, so if you know a non-member you would like to get to join, contact me as soon as possible; the deal is as good as it gets!

Scale Committee…

… We recently sent out invitations to various members to be on the scale committee and am delighted to inform everyone that we’ve received quite a few responses in a very short time. If you are interested in serving and haven’t been contacted, please call us right away as we expect to begin work by mid-June.

Coconut Grove Playhouse…

… I have had two very productive meetings with the Coconut Grove Playhouse in an attempt to reach an agreement that will allow our members to once again receive payments into their pension fund accounts (and many other items are under discussion.) Talks are progressing; we’ll keep you informed.

Florida Philharmonic…

… The FPO still has far too many outstanding grievances. We are continuing to work with the orchestra to resolve the many problems that exist. One can only hope with the encouraging report from management regarding finances, that there are better days ahead. We presently have one matter in the hands of the American Arbitration Association and a number of others ready to go if we can’t resolve them soon. Amid all of the problems, the orchestra continues to play exceptionally well; if you haven’t heard them lately, do yourself a favor and check out a concert during the upcoming Beethoven Festival in July. There certainly aren’t too many jobs getting in the way during mid-July!

AFM Convention…

… The AFM convention gets underway next month in Las Vegas. Both Lisa Fox and I will attend. There is an article summarizing many of the items on the agenda; please make your opinions regarding any of these topics known to us.

Elections…

… It’s election time once again; with everything that has been going on, it only seems like eight or nine years since we took office! All of us who have done our very best on your behalf must now decide whether to run again, and all of you must decide who is to run your Local for the next two years. If you are interested, or know someone who may be interested, nominations are due in September and elections in November.

… A final reminder regarding the newsletter: this is the OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION mechanism of your Local. Please at least glance it over to make sure you don’t miss any important deadlines regarding meetings, dues, workshops, etc.

… We’ll be in touch, you do the same …
