…Life Insurance: To Be Or Not To Be…

…As has been previously discussed in the newsletter and at membership meetings, the issue of whether to continue participating in the life insurance business is a very volatile issue for our membership. There is an article regarding the pros and cons of life insurance coverage in this issue (see page 5). We will be holding a membership meeting on Thursday, May 18 where you can voice your opinion with your vote.

…PTG / SFX…

…Negotiations with SFX (the parent company that assimilated PTG and numerous other entertainment companies and is now one of the largest entertainment conglomerates in the world) have broken down. We are now going to involve a federal mediator. Obviously, our number one goal will be make sure that any settlement is retroactive to December 1, 1999 as was previously agreed. Our argument from the beginning has been the local scale is not even close to industry standards. We understood from the beginning that we would not be able to correct this in a single contract negotiation, but we also strongly held to the position that we must make up some ground as far as industry standards were concerned. We will keep you apprised as negotiations continue…

…Local 655 / MPTF Scholarships…

…We recently concluded our audition process and have awarded the first three scholarships from Local 655 and the Recording Industries Music Performance Trust Fund. Erica Peel, a flautist studying at the University of Miami, was the winner of the $1,000.00 scholarship.
