Recording Rap

On Sept. 13 the first Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast by CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Latin Grammys mark the first time a major United States network will devote two hours of prime-time television to bilingual programming. Emilio Estefan Jr. is leading the nominations pack with six. Hopefully Miami will be hosting the 2001 Latin Grammys.

I attended the AFM Electronic Media Conference in Los Angeles on July 13 and 14th, along with other Union representatives from the U.S and Canada. The following are just some of the subjects that were discussed: Napster, Symphony Opera Ballet Orchestra Internet Agreement, Electronic Media Internet Agreement, Demo Recording Conversion, Runaway Scoring, Dark Dates and what Locals need to do about these. It was interesting networking with reps from other locals and discussing ways to solve our common problems.

The next day I traveled to the George Meany Labor Relations Center in Silver Springs, Maryland to attend the AFM's Local Leader Education Program. In attendance were fifteen Local leaders along with Tammy Kirk (IEB), Ken Shirk (IEB and Education Committee) and Barbara Nielsen (Executive Assistant to the President). The goal of this program is to educate Local leaders on the labor movement as a whole, along with teaching specific tools for running their Locals. This week-long program helps to build a strong foundation on which Local leaders can build. Subjects included: History of the AFM, History of the labor movement, Problem Solving Techniques, Goal Setting, Bylaws, Organizing and Overcoming Obstacles. I was glad to be a part of this educational experience.
