Internet Agreement Ratified

Musicians, including members of the Florida Phil. and Boca Pops, recently ratified a national agreement covering distribution of live and prerecorded music over the Internet. The agreement is retroactive to February 1, 2000 and runs through January 31, 2002.

The agreement covers audio webcasts of live performances, as well as distribution of pre-existing recordings by streaming or download over the Internet, both on the institution‘s web site and at licensed third-party sites. Copy protection of all material is required, and a joint local institution/musician committee must unanimously approve all projects. The agreement also forms a National Internet Oversight Committee composed of both management and musicians.

Some of the conditions of the agreement are:

  • 10% Pension contribution.

  • Minimum upfront payments of 6% of weekly scale (48% of per-service scale) for up to 120 minutes of content.

  • 1/2% of weekly scale (4% of per-service scale) for each 10-minute increment over 120.

  • Revenue-sharing based on direct sales, merchandising, and advertising and click-through revenue.

  • Up to 3 minutes may be used (without payment) for promotional purposes.

Dallas Symphony Embraces the Internet

Earlier this year the Dallas Symphony launched a $10 million, 3-year, multi-partner project to create DallasSymphony.com. The Dallas Symphony will provide artistic content, while technology and communication giants the Hart Group, Nortel Networks, EDS, and Temerlin McClain will provide financial help as well as their Internet expertise.

The goal of DallasSymphony.com is to reach new audiences and expand the educational activities of the Symphony. In addition to information about the Dallas Symphony, the DSO musicians, guest performers, and the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the site will have e-commerce capabilities: patrons will be able to purchase tickets online and subscribers will be able to trade tickets.

Concert information will be available, as well as an interactive music education section, DSOKids.com, where school-age children learn about symphony music and play related games. And the DSO hopes to reach new audiences through live webcasts which will feature high-quality audio and interactive graphics and text.

The DSO is a signatory to the Internet Agreement. You can visit their website at:
