So how do I get one of those MPTF Gigs?

The performance requirements are few: the concert must be free and open to the public, the music must be the primary purpose for audience attendance, and performers must acknowledge the MPTF as well as cosponsor support in all programs and publicity credits. Concerts can take place at schools, malls, in the park, and even in concert halls. They can be educational concerts, jazz concerts, rock concerts, classical concerts, ethnic concerts, etc.

While the MPTF pays for part of the cost, cosponsors usually must pay for at least 60% of the bill. Where to find a cosponsor depends on where you want to play. School band directors usually have a budget to bring musicians to their school, local businesses such as your bank or the local shopping mall association may be interested in sponsoring public concerts, and your city arts council might want to partially fund an "Art in the Park" festival.

The Local can help with the necessary paperwork, which must be filed and approved at least 45 days in advance (see procedures below). We have Cosponsor Commitment forms as well as the MPTF forms which will be filed through the Local.

Musicians will be paid at the applicable Local scale, including cartage and doubling, where applicable. The MPTF Trustee acts as paymaster, which means that in addition to receiving Workmen’s Compensation and Pension, you are relieved of payroll and administrative duties.

The General Procedure:

  • Put together a program and assemble the performers.

  • Find a location, date, and cosponsor.

  • Obtain a TF-2 Form and Cosponsor Commitment Form from the Local and return correctly completed with cosponsor check or municipal contract attached (incorrect or incomplete forms will be rejected by the Fund).

  • After being notified of approval, play the gig. Be sure Payroll forms are filled out and returned to the Local. These document who played the gig, their mailing address, and how much they will be paid.

  • That’s it! The Fund mails checks directly to the performers.
