President's Report

… Nominations & Elections …

September is right around the corner, about a block and a half past your vacation, and we have our own bi-annual nominations meeting, with the election to follow in November. Personally, I have made no decision yet, although I have some potential opportunities I’m looking at. I urge you to get involved. Your Local is only as good as you make it.

… New Scale Recommendations …

I apologize for the scales being presented later than they should. Recommendations have been made to begin the process much earlier next time around. Although the scale committee has not made its final recommendations yet due to schedule conflicts, overall it appears as though a 4% increase per year is in the works.

… September Meeting: Most Important …

Both the Nominations Meeting and the General Meeting when the new scales will be voted upon will be scheduled during the third week in September. Please make every effort to attend these meetings, as they may well be the most important ones of the year.

… AFM Convention …

The convention is June 23-27 in Las Vegas and the Executive Board has reviewed all of the Recommendations and Resolutions. If you have taken the time to look these items over and have an opinion you would like to share, please let your thoughts be known; otherwise, we’ll make our best judgment on your behalf based on the issue as discussed by our Board.

… FPO Back In The Saddle Again …

Over the May 19-20 weekend, I had the pleasure of monitoring the recording sessions of a new CD on the Naxos label by the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. During the two days of recording, the FPO recorded Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Symphony # 2, and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Terrific stuff! If you haven’t heard this band lately, you owe it to yourself to do so. Next on the agenda is the Beethoven By The Beach V festival in July. Show your support for your fellow musicians and catch a performance by the orchestra and you may very well find yourself going back for seconds!

… Silent Symphonies …

Although we are getting a remarkable response from many small orchestras and presenters of symphonic programs, there are some organizations out there that won’t even talk with us. Lately, I’ve had more time to focus my attention on some of those other organizations in our area not under contract. Unfortunately, a couple that I have contacted, by phone and letter, have refused to discuss anything of substance. I get the impression that they think if they ignore us long enough, we’ll just go away; that will be up to you, our members performing in those organizations. It’s what you say and do that counts, not what management or I do or say.

… End Game: The Season Grinds To A Halt …

This is the time of year when most can relax a little and recharge the batteries before going into a full-bore panic attack waiting for the work to come back again in the fall. My family and I are planning some time away to relax together and look toward the future and what new opportunities lay ahead, here’s hoping you get to do the same…

I’ll stay in touch…you do the same…
