MPTF Scholarship Winners

Local 655 is pleased to announce the following winners of this year’s MPTF Scholarships. Thanks to members Jeanne Tarrant, Alfredo Oliva, Gary Keller, and Dana Teboe for serving on the selection committee, thanks to Dean Hipp of the University of Miami for providing a location to hold the auditions, and congratulations to the winners!

Horby Lopez

A Hialeah resident and tuba performance major at Florida International University, Horby intends on pursuing a Master of Music degree after graduation and then hopes to win an orchestral position. He studies tuba with Jay Bertolet and has also studied guitar with Lindsay Blair and Carlos Molina. A first-chair player for FMEA Inter-state and Intercollegiate Bands and All-County Band and orchestra, Horby was also participant in the 25th Anniversary FIU Festival in association with Disney.

Daniel Andai

A violin performance major at the Harid Conservatory at Lynn University and a Surfside resident, Daniel hopes to become a violin soloist. Currently a student of Sergiu Schwartz, Daniel was finalist in the 2001 Harid Solo Competition, winner of numerous competitions, and has soloed with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, the FIU Orchestra, and the New World School of the Arts Orchestra.

Aaron Irwin

A University of Miami alto saxophone performance major, Aaron currently studies with Gary Keller and hails from Decatur, Illinois. He was a semifinalist for the East Coast Jazz Festival’s Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship, a recipient of Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Rolling Meadows "Jazz in the Meadows" Competition and the Argo and Milliken University Jazz Festivals, and as a member of the DePaul Saxophone Quartet he was a winner of the 1997 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
