Larry Ledwon, October 4, 1959 – March 8, 2002

sympho1.gifLarry was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. He received a BA in English from the University of Michigan, a BA in Music from their School of Music, and a MM from Boston University. He taught at the Interlochen Music Academy and played viola for the Florida Philharmonic and the Florida Grand Opera for over fifteen years.

Larry was certainly one of the more colorful members of the Florida Philharmonic...you never knew when he would show up to a performance in his leather tuxedo. When things got boring or stressful, you could always count on Larry to lighten the situation, whether it be by playing with his viola behind his head, making sarcastic comments, or teaching phrases in Polish to his stand partner, says fellow FPO violist Deena Shapiro. He loved his dogs, and wouldn’t replace his viola case that they chewed up because it reminded him of them. He also had an obsession with antiques, recalls Deena, and he searched everywhere to find a rotary telephone (which he finally found, but it could only receive incoming calls and not make outgoing!)

Larry was asked to sit in on the 1994 FPO negotiations for his "incredible note-taking ability," as former committee member Tim Conner states. "Turns out that his comic twist on much of what took place in those meetings really did help us keep our sanity." At one point during the negotiations when both sides were "about a penny apart" but unable to reach an agreement, he took a penny out of his own pocket and threw it on the table to emphasize the ridiculousness of the situation.

Larry will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and colleagues. He is survived by his parents, four sisters, a brother, three brothers-in-law, a niece, and several extended companions.
