Recording Rap

On July 8th the AFM sent me to New York to attend ongoing negotiations with the new Latin recording labels. We met at the law offices of Attorney Norman Samnick, council for the record labels. Sony Discos, EMI Latin and WEA Latina were represented, along with AFM representatives President Tom Lee, council George Cohen, Electronic Media Director Carol Sato, Contract Administrator Pat Varriale, Special Assistant to the President Dick Gabriel, San Antonio Organizer Mike Muniz, and myself. Out of the first seven recording projects by Latin recording labels under the AFM agreement, six were done in Miami.

The labels discussed the newly signed artists and are dropping older artists that are not selling well. Miami labels will be hiring payroll services to process musicians payments. The AFM answered questions concerning Low Budget procedures, Health and Welfare payments, and overall administrative issues.

We welcome two new commercial producers that have joined our Local: Pablo Caceres with Musica Applicada, and Steve Lak who is doing industrial videos. Recording producer Yasmil Marrufo has also joined.

The song "Escuchame," recorded by Carlos Ponce, was used in a commercial and seven musicians received a new use payment. "Kiss the Rain," a song recorded by Billie Meyers, was also used in a TV commercial and six musicians received a new use payment for being on the B report form. Are you missing out on these extra payments? Make sure all of your recording dates are on AFM contracts! Call me if I can help.
