President's Report

I leave office on December 31, 2003 after 6 years in this office. I had intended to share some personal remembrances about the past 6 years and thank so many of you that had taken the time to call and thank me for my efforts on their behalf.  Instead, I find myself saddened by what I feel is a betrayal of the trust that I feel is necessary to be a Local officer. At the last membership meeting a resolution was passed despite my personal plea to postpone, to eliminate life insurance at Local 655.

First of all, I agree personally that the Local should not be in the insurance business, but my objection is that we didn’t do enough to inform the segment of our members that are most affected by this decision. I feel we failed that significant portion of our membership miserably and I will carry that with me forever.

To this segment of our membership, I am truly sorry, not that the insurance is gone, but the manner in which it was taken away. In my opinion, if we had done this to the recording or symphonic musicians in the Local, we would have a revolt on our hands. The best way I can sum up my feelings is that it is “legally right, morally wrong”.

As I take my leave to pursue a musical dream of mine, I thank (most of) you for the opportunity to serve you and hope you feel things are a bit better than before we began this journey 6 years ago.

…I’ll stay in touch, you do the same… Good-bye, and good luck.
