NLRB Rules Against Starbucks
As a result of Unfair Labor Practice charges filed by the IWW Starbucks Workers Union, Starbucks has agreed to reinstate workers who were discharged for union activity; to allow sharing of written union information on company property; and to end threats, bribes, and surveillance of members. The IWW Starbucks Workers Union was founded in 2004 and has worked to raise wages, improve job safety and secure work hours, and resolve grievances over issues such as payroll errors and exhausting schedules.
Conductor Salaries Skyrocket
The Wall Street Journal Reports that music director salaries have skyrocketed even as many orchestral musicians take wage freezes or cuts. Some of the music directors whose salaries have increased faster than their orchestral musicians include:

Daniel Barenboim, Chicago Symphony (69% over 5 years, to nearly $2 million).

Paavo Jarvi, Cincinnati Symphony (37% over 3 years, to $626,000).
Monks Have Bosses Too
Five monks and four office workers at the Daikanjin Temple have formed a union affiliated with Japan’s National Confederation of Trade Unions. Monk Junshin Hosono cited harassment by head monks as one of the reasons for seeking representation.
