Double Times
With the assistance of Janice Galassi (AFM) and Jan Gippo (ICSOM), we recently visited the New World Symphony and Lynn University to bring the message of the AFM to the respective fellows/students. We had some good discussions with them about job security, minimum standards, and the role of the AFM, and we hope to establish regular visits to all of the local music schools in the future.
The AFM recently hosted a Symphonic Symposium which we had the opportunity to attend. There were several information-packed presentations, including:
-
A negotiations panel discussion with SSD negotiators as well as lawyers who have negotiated contracts with major symphonies.
-
A symphonic finances presentation by accountant and SSD consultant Ron Bauers.
-
A grievance and arbitration presentation by Len Liebowitz.
-
An organizing presentation by Janice Galassi.
-
A Public/Media Relations presentation by SSD consultant Barbara Haig.
It was great to see officers and musicians from big and small Locals/orchestras attending, and to have an opportunity for us to discuss mutual concerns, share our knowledge, and to work together to further the interests of symphonic musicians throughout the U.S.
FPO Claims Paid
Florida Philharmonic bankruptcy claims are finally being paid. Non-priority claims (including the bulk of the musicians' claims) are being paid at about $.22 on the dollar, and the musicians are receiving slightly more than $1 million, or on average $13,532 per musician.
