That Union Thing

Charter School teachers in Pembroke Pines voted to join the Broward Teachers Union (an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association). The teachers believe union representation will help them make the charter schools better institutions and allow them to have a voice.

Postal Workers have ratified a new four-year agreement. The new contract, which covers more than 272,000 employees, includes wage and benefit increases, and converts 10,000 part-time jobs to full-time.

In the past year, about 22,000 AT&T workers have joined Communications Workers of America. With the merger with Cingular, they now join 40,000 Cingular union members, making Cingular's workforce nearly ninety percent union members. This success is due to Cingular's agreement not to interfere in workers' choice for union membership. Should the Employee Free Choice Act become law, all workers would have the freedom to choose union representation by signing authorization cards, without interference from employers.
