The scholarship was awarded during the May 20 Broward Youth Chamber Orchestra concert, where Perez was performing as Concerto Competition Winner. Perez has studied French horn with Holly Ballard (Florida Classical Orchestra) and Jerry Peel (University of Miami) and has performed with the Ars Flores Orchestra, the Florida Youth Orchestra, the Florida All-State Band, the Broward All-County Honors Band and Orchestra, and various ensembles at Cypress Bay High. She has also performed in a side-by-side concert with the New World Symphony. Perez will pursue a Bachelor of Music degree at UF and hopes to become a professional musician and French horn instructor.

South Florida Musicians Association, Local 655, American Federation of Musicians, was formed in 1913 and represents over 600 professional musicians from Key West to Vero Beach. Whether it is negotiating fair agreements, protecting ownership of recorded music, securing benefits such as health care and pension, or lobbying our legislators, South Florida Musicians Association is committed to raising industry standards and placing the professional musician in the foreground of the cultural landscape.

Music Performance Fund (MPF) is a non-profit, tax-exempt public service organization under section 501 (c) of the Internal Revenue Code. MPF is the world's largest sponsor of live, admission-free musical programs. The Fund was established in 1948 by the recording companies of North America and the American Federation of Musicians as part of their collective bargaining agreement. A small royalty on the sale of some recorded music is contributed to the Fund by signatory recording companies, and these funds are supplemented by co-sponsoring organizations. There is never an admission charge for MPF performances, and its performances cannot be used to raise money, sell merchandise, or promote political or religious events.
