That Union Thing

Miami-Dade County Commissioners have unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the Employee Free Choice Act. They are one of more than 30 local government bodies that have urged Congress to pass the bill.

Twelve GE appliance repairmen on Florida's east coast will now be represented by IUE-CWA, and 80 pilots and flight engineers in Orlando will now be represented by ALPA.

After nearly 10 years, the national minimum wage will finally increase. By the end of the summer, the minimum wage will rise from $5.15 an hour to $5.85. It will increase to $6.55 next summer, and to $7.25 in the summer of 2009. The last increase was in 1997 (from $4.75 to $5.15). This new increase will end the longest period without an increase since minimum wage was established in 1938. More than 25 states, including Florida, already have minimum wages in excess of the federal minimum wage.

McDonald's has agreed to pay one penny more per pound of tomatoes to increase wages of tomato pickers, in response to pressure from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The Coalition reached a similar deal with Taco Bell in 2005, and now has Burger King as its next target.
