Letter Carriers Protest Outsourcing

Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers have staged informational pickets to protest outsourcing of their jobs to private companies. In Florida, private carriers used to be used only in sprawling, underpopulated areas, but now high-rise developments in urban and suburban areas are being handed over to private carriers paying low wages and no benefits.

Comedy Central Shows Get Union Contracts

The Writers Guild of America has reached an agreement with the Comedy Central network covering writers on The Sarah Silverman Program, Mind of Mencia, The Showbiz Show with David Spade, and American Body Shop. With the addition of these shows, every live-action show on Comedy Central is now covered by a WGA contract governing compensation levels, pension and health benefits, credits, and residuals for reuse. 

Oprah & Friends Show gets Union Contract

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has reached an agreement covering the XM Satellite Radio show Oprah & Friends. The agreement covers wages, benefits, and working conditions for the nine hosts and  the announcer working for the show.

Residuals Threatened

The Writers Guild of America has begun negotiations with Hollywood studios and producers for a successor to their current agreement covering film and TV writers, which expires on October 31. The most contentious issue on the table appears to be the sharing of revenue from digital distribution. Studios want to recoup their costs before having to make payments, and want a three-year period of experimentation to see where the industry is headed before coming up with a method for sharing digital distribution revenue.
