According to Americans for the Arts, nonprofit organizations in Miami -Dade county brought $922 million to the economy in 2004, and supported almost 23,000 jobs. The organizations also delivered over $100 million in local and state tax revenue.

Russell Johnson, acoustical consultant for the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts, has passed away. He was 83.

The Palm Beach Theater Guild is fighting to return the arts to the Royal Poinciana Playhouse. The Guild hopes to bring five plays a year, as well as Palm Beach Symphony and Ballet Florida performances, to the Playhouse, which has been dark since 2004. The owner of the Playhouse, Sidney Spiegel, has said that operating the theater is no longer financially viable and had planned to tear it down and build a luxury hotel, but this summer a judge ruled that the 1979 land-use agreement for the historical theater requires it to remain an arts venue.

Leaders of the Coconut Grove Playhouse are exploring partnerships with local colleges and universities to reopen the theater, which has been closed since April 2006. Miami-Dade county officials expect to announce a recovery plan for the theater by the end of the year. 

The Orange County Commission has approved a $1.1 billion plan to upgrade the Citrus Bowl and build an arena and a performing arts center. The $480 million arena would be home to the Orlando Magic, and the $425 million performing arts center would be home to the Orlando Opera, the Orlando Ballet, and the Orlando Philharmonic. The plan also includes money to build five community gyms, and will be financed by increased hotel taxes, property taxes, donations, and $60 million from the Orlando Magic.

SoundExchange has reached an agreement with large webcasters to limit fees to $50,000 per year for online radio stations that offer more than 100 channels. The agreement also calls for accurate reporting of what is streamed as well as collaboration on ways to prevent illegal downloading of copyrighted material.

RapidCue has been launched by ASCAP and BMI to help administer royalty payments for television and film. A secure website will allow users to electronically submit music cue sheets, which list all music performed in a film or program. 

Univision has begun talks with EMI, Warner, Universal, and Sony BMG to sell its music label and publishing business.

The Florida Orchestra braces for cuts in funding due to tax cuts. The orchestra expects to lose $80,000 if the city of Tampa enacts a 20 percent cut in grants to nonprofit organizations, as well as past of their $100,000 in state funding.
