Open Auditions A Great Success
Forty musicians and five union contractors participated in the October 6 open auditions sponsored by South Florida Musicians Association.
The auditions were a great opportunity for local musicians to show their talents to south Florida's busiest union contractors, as well as an opportunity for those contractors to hear new talent and for the union to introduce itself to musicians who may not be aware of the AFM.
Thanks go to Dan Satterwhite for his assistance in conducting the auditions, as well as to Lynn University for hosting, and union contractors Tim Devine, Michael Ellert, Kurt Hagen, Gerry Miller, and Wendy Stewart, without whom the auditions would not have been possible.
For those considering auditioning next year, or who may have auditions elsewhere scheduled, tips that were learned at the open auditions included:
- Good intonation is essential; make frequent use of your tuner!
- Nerves can wreak havoc on pulse, so practice with a metronome.
- Unless there's a screen, presentation is important, too, so don't forget to smile and keep your mistakes to yourself.
- When given a choice, pick music that plays to your strengths rather than a flashy showpiece that might not hold up under pressure.
- Don't forget dynamic contrast, especially the softer dynamics.
- For resumes, keep them to one page, include your contact information, and if sending by e-mail, use a standard format like Microsoft Word DOC (not DOCX!) or PDF.
