Union membership rose last year by the largest amount since 1983. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2007 union membership rose by 311,000 to 12.1 percent of the total workforce.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported that 2007 had the highest rate of inflation since 1990. The national Consumer Price Index rose 4.1 percent last year, up from 2.5 percent in 2006. And south Florida's inflation rate was higher than any other metropolitan area in the country, at 5.8 percent, also a seventeen-year high. Gasoline and housing costs are blamed for the recent increases in inflation.

The State of Michigan has joined New York in the fight against employee misclassification as independent contractors.
