Broadway contributed $5.1 billion to the New York City economy in 2006-7. The figure includes spending on productions as well as spending on hotels, restaurants, and so on by visitors whose primary reason for coming to NYC was to see a Broadway show.

A federal judge has established a formula for paying royalties to songwriters and publishers for use of music online by AOL, RealNetworks, and Yahoo. The formula would require them to pay 2.5 percent of their music revenue dating back to 2002, a sum which could total $100 million. An extended appeals process is expected.

Universal Classics and Jazz has added management and live event production to its repertoire. The label has formed Universal Music Classical Artists Management and Productions, which will be run by former IMG Artists senior Vice President Jeffrey Vanderveen. Some of the artists to be represented include Anna Netrebko and Thomas Hampson. 

Symphony

Seraphic Fire's chamber orchestra, the Firebird Chamber Orchestra, will debut on October 9 at the Arsht Center. The new orchestra will present three concerts next season in the Knight Concert Hall, as well as a joint concert with the Seraphic Fire choir in April.

The New World Symphony has requested $27 million in bed and beverage taxes from Miami-Dade County to help build its new campus. The NWS has already broken ground on the $150 million facility, which will replace its home at the Lincoln Theater.
