That Union Thing

A bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Representatives Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Robert Andrews (D-NJ) would toughen penalties against employers who missclassify employees as independent contractors. The bill would also require employers to give workers the right to challenge independent contractor classification and require the Department of Labor to conduct targeted audits in industries that frequently misclassify employees. AFTRA has reached an agreement with Hollywood studios. The agreement, which must be ratified by members, would establish higher fees for downloaded content, residual payments for ad-supported Internet streaming, and require development of a system of obtaining actors' consent prior to using their images or voices in online clips. The new contract would run three years, through June 2011.

In another victory for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Burger King has agreed to pay an additional penny per pound of tomatoes to increase wages for the Florida farm workers. Last year, McDonald's agreed to the same terms, following the lead of Yum! Brands (Taco Bell and others), which was the CIW's first target.

The Miami-Dade County Commission has passed a resolution backing the AFL-CIO drive to fix the health care system and provide health care for everyone.The County, the eighth largest in the nation, is now on record as supporting control of rising health care costs, providing health care for all, giving everyone access to preventative care, and preserving an individual's right to choose their own doctor.
