The Carbonell Awards have been suspended for 2009. The Carbonells annually honor the best in theater work in south Florida.

The Carbonell board of directors have cited the death of executive director and founder Jack Zink, the increasing costs of gasoline, and resolution of complaints about the system for selecting awards as the reasons for the hiatus.

A study by the University of North Florida has found that Jacksonville's nonprofit arts and culture industry contributed $105 million to the local economy in 2007, and supported 477 full-time and 44 part-time jobs.

SAG, AFTRA, and Actors' Equity have launched the Inclusion in the Arts & Media of People with Disabilities (I AM PWD) campaign. With only three regular characters in primetime TV with disabilities, I AM PWD hopes to urge the entertainment industry to increase opportunities for disabled performers.

Recording

AFTRA has signed a one-year extension of its videogame contract. The extension includes a three percent increase in session wages and a half-percent increase in health and retirement benefits. SAG, whose videogame agreement expires on December 31, has yet to reach an agreement with the industry.

Symphony

On January 20, 2009 Trey Devey will assume the position of President of the Cincinnati Symphony. Devey had served as Executive Director of the Florida Philharmonic from 2002-2003, the year the orchestra filed for bankruptcy.
