Local 655 Call to Action
We are at an important juncture in our history as a Local. Due to the recent situations which have arisen affecting employment opportunities for professional musicians in South Florida, the Local has begun taking actions intended to promote job security and improved working conditions for all local professional musicians.
The Local Executive Board has been working tirelessly to address these issues, as well as other issues of concern for our members. However, the Board alone cannot create change. Success will only come with the support and participation of the membership. The true power of the Local rests in the membership, and not in its elected officials.
There are many ways in which you can help strengthen your Local:
- We need you to share your concerns. Attend a membership meeting, speak with an officer, call or email the Local. Encourage your colleagues to engage in discussions about our problems and brainstorm ways to fix them.
- We need you to abide by the minimum wage scales. Wages will only rise if we collectively insist on being compensated fairly.
- We need you to help us get more jobs under union contract. Only through collective bargaining can we guarantee job security.
- We need you to help us show arts managers how artistic integrity is enhanced through steady, secure work with decent wages.
- We need you to help us get support from our audiences and the general public for a sustainable arts community providing living wages.
Collectively, there is no limit to what we can accomplish. Please participate in any way that you can. Our union is only as strong as its members!
