The states of Oregon and Montana have recently passed laws that classify musicians working in nightclubs and bars as independent contractors. Previously, in both states, musicians were classified as employees of the venues and subect to workers compensation and unemployment tax.

Symphonic

The Orlando Opera has suspended operations. The 51-year old opera company has seen reduced ticket sales and donations, and is the sixth professional opera company to cease operations in the United States this season.

The New World Symphony has launched a new series of mini-concerts priced at $2.50 per ticket. The casual, 20- to 30-minute concerts were launched in November in an attempt to reach new audiences.
