That Union Thing

The Screen Actors Guild has reached a tentative agreement with movie and television studios. The agreement would run through June 2011, putting SAG back at the bargaining table at the same time writers' and directors' unions would be negotiating new contracts.

Florida's unemployment rate has reached its highest point in nearly 35 years. The 9.7 percent rate is nearly double the rate a year ago. Professional and business services are the hardest hit sectors, having even more job losses than the construction industry.

In a 2-to1 ruling, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has overturned a decision by the National Labor Relations Board and declared that drivers for FedEx Home are independent contractors and ineligible for union representation. The Teamsters Union is confident that the Appeals Court ruling will not survive a review by the full court or the U.S. Supreme Court.

Workers at the North Miami Beach Wal-Mart are fighting to be represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. The store is one of 100 stores in 15 states being organized by UFCW.
