That Union Thing

The 150 part-time teachers in the pre-college division of the Manhattan School of Music have voted to be represented by the New York State United Teachers. Teachers complained of low pay, lack of job security, and lack of a grievance procedure.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 759 held an informational picket at an FPL facility in Broward County last month. They have been in negotiations since their contract expired in November 2008, and are protesting the lack of a current agreement.

A hearing will be held in June to address the firing of six workers by TCB Systems, a subcontractor for Nova Southeastern University. Nova Southeastern replaced contractor Unicco with TCB Systems after a successful organizing attempt in 2006, and the Service Employees International Union claims that the employees were not rehired because of their union activities.

The AFM and 17 other national and global organizations have formed the Professionals for the Public Interest, a coalition advocating standards of professional integrity and enforcement of a strong code of ethics. The coalition has launched a website, http://www.pftpi.org , where professionals can share their experiences and ideas.
