That Union Thing

The Service Employees International Union has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Security Alliance of Florida, claiming that the company fired an employee in retaliation for helping organize for the union. For the past two years, Security Alliance has provided security services to the city of Miami Beach.

United Faculty of Florida has filed a complaint against Florida Atlantic University, claiming that the University violated its collective bargaining agreement by laying off five tenured professors, rather than less experienced faculty members in the same program. The layoffs are part of $16.7 million in budget cuts for next school year.

Florida's unemployment rate has reached its highest level in 33 years. The May rate of 10.2 percent is nearly a percentage point higher than the national average. Florida is second only to California in the number of jobs lost.
