That Union Thing

The Broward Teachers Union is suing the Broward School District to make sure that laid-off teachers are rehired rather than replaced.

The district has hired 89 new teachers while nearly 300 laid-off teachers remain unemployed, and the district has yet to provide evidence that that none of the laid-off teachers are qualified for the 89 positions being filled by new hires.

The Federal minimum wage has risen from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour. The increase will have a minimal impact on Florida residents as Florida has a state minimum wage of $7.21 per hour. Despite the higher Florida minimum wage, personal income of Florida residents fell 1.3 percent for the last quarter of 2008, more than three times the national average drop of 0.4 percent.
