A new survey by Americans for the Arts reports that attendance at arts events has declined over the past ten years. The study states that attendance at music events fell six percent. The decline is partially attributed to people turning to the Internet for entertainment, including the watching of streamed simulcasts and event replays.Symphony
Palm Beach Opera has become the first major arts organization in Florida, and the second opera company in the U.S., to launch its own iPhone app. The app provides information on upcoming performances, including ticket availability and program notes, as well as podcasts, blogs, and videos from the Opera.
The Cleveland Orchestra has ratified a new master agreement. The new three-year agreement includes wages freezes for the first two years and graduated raises of three percent and two percent in the final year.
The Cleveland Orchestra has announced residency activities at Indiana University. The activities will include performances, master classes, coachings, and arts administration seminars. The residency was expected to begin in January 2010 but was delayed by a strike by Cleveland Orchestra musicians, and is expected to be rescheduled.
The Utah Symphony/Utah Opera has received a $1 million donation from the Eccles Foundation. Representatives of the Foundation said that the donation was made in part in recognition of the sacrifice made by the musicians when they agreed to donate $1.3 million in salary and benefits for the 2009-2010 season.
