Miami City Ballet's founding artistic director Edward Villella will retire from the company at the end of the 2012-2013 season. Villella had been with the Ballet since he founded it in 1986.

The European Union has increased royalty protection for musical recordings from 50 to 70 years. The national legislatures of the 27 member states of the European Union will be required to adopt the measure within two years. This move will bring Europe more in line with the international standard. Copyright protection in the United States is for 95 years.

The Milwaukee Symphony ended its 2011 fiscal year with a balanced budget. Contributed income rose nearly 14 percent over the previous year, and the orchestra had nearly 1000 new donors. Subscription attendance also rose 2.5 percent.

The Kentucky Opera has reached an agreement with the Louisville Federation of Musicians to have a live orchestra for its season-opening performances of Carmen. The Opera had previously used the Louisville Orchestra as its pit orchestra, but the Orchestra, which recently emerged from bankruptcy, has locked out its musicians.
