California has passed a new law imposing penalties on employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors. Violators will be subject to fines of $5,000 to $25,000 and will be required to post a notice on their website. United States Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has also made a priority of cracking down on misclassification of workers. The Government Accountability Office estimates that $2.72 billion in tax revenue goes uncollected due to misclassification.

 

The faculty at Edison State College (Fort Myers) are seeking mediation to end an impasse in contract negotiations. The faculty has been offered a two percent raise, which would expire after one year. The faculty believe the offer is unfair in light of 4 percent raises recently received by administrators, and 5 percent raises recently received by hourly employees.
