Floridians spend less than anyone else in the country on state government.

According to the Department of Management Services, Floridians spend on average just $37 per year on state government, less than half of the national average of $75. The report also shows that the average state employee earns only $38,299 per year, and the average career-service even less at $34,384 per year. In comparison, the average wage for Floridians in all industries was $43,210.

State Senator Dwight Bullard (D-Cutler Bay) and State Representative Cynthia Stafford (D-Miami) have introduced bills to increase the minimum wage in Florida. If passed, the proposals would increase the minimum wage from $7.93 per hour to $10.10 per hour, and the new rate would also apply to tipped employees, who currently are guaranteed only $4.91 per hour.

Palm Beach County commissioners have approved $100,000 to fund a program run by the Legal Aid Society to help employees recover unpaid wages. Legal Aid Society would provide wage dispute services, assist employees in recovering wages through the court system, and also hold workshops and presentations to teach employees about their rights and ways to recover unpaid wages.

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has agreed to review two cases involving unpaid internships. The court will review the case where Fox Searchlight was ruled the employer of interns for Black Swan, as well as the case involving class action status for fashion magazine interns at Hearst.
