The grandson of Duke Ellington is suing EMI Music over foreign royalty payments. The suit alleges that EMI has breached a 1961 royalty contract by paying additional commissions to subpublishers owned by parent company Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which in turn reduces the royalties paid to the Ellington estate by as much as half.

The San Francisco Opera has reached an agreement on a new four-year contract with its musicians. The new agreement calls for three percent raises in each of the four years, as well as changes to health coverage which are expected to save the company as much as $400,000 annually.

The Detroit Symphony has received $3.75 million from the William Davidson Foundation in support of its Neighborhood Concert Series. The series brings the orchestra out of Orchestra Hall and into seven neighborhood venues throughout the community.

The Charlotte Symphony finished its 2013-14 season with a $71,000 surplus, the first surplus since 2002. The orchestra attributes the improved financial position to increased giving by the Board of Directors, an increase in giving to the annual fund, and a "musician buddies" program for donors.
