That Union Thing

Health insurance premiums are rising faster in Florida than elsewhere in the US.

Since 2010, health care premiums for Floridians have risen 10 percent per year, twice the national average. At 35 percent, Floridians pay a higher share of premiums for family coverage than residents of any other state, according to a survey by the Commonwealth Fund.

Florida now has the fewest weeks of unemployment benefits of any state in the US. Florida is one of only eight states offering fewer than the standard of 26 weeks of benefits, and the number of weeks of benefits in Florida is tied to the state unemployment rate. Because of declining unemployment, Florida has reduced benefits from 16 weeks to 14, while North Carolina has increased benefits from 14 weeks to 15. Florida also offers one of the lowest weekly benefits in the US, at only $275 per week.

A report by Oxfam predicts that by next year the richest 1 percent will own 50 percent of the world's wealth, or more than the remaining 99 percent of the population. The share of the global wealth owned by the richest 1 percent has risen from 44 percent in 2009 to 48 percent in 2014.
