State Senator Jack Latvala (R-Clearwater) has filed a bill that would make it a felony in Florida to fail to pay wages.Senate Bill 1318 would make various forms of wage theft, including paying below minimum wage or forcing employees to work off the clock, subject to criminal prosecution. Under current Florida law, wage theft is illegal, but it is not a crime, making it difficult or impossible for law enforcement agencies to pursue action.
According to Realtor.com, home prices in south Florida are outpacing wage growth. The Study found that residents of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties will need to spend 42 percent of the area's median income to buy a home. Median home prices have risen by 32 percent, while wages have only risen by 4.4 percent. Nationally, home prices have only risen by 17 percent and the mortgage-to-income ratio is 27.6 percent. South Florida is now the fifth-least-affordable housing market, behind San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York-Newark.
