Last Month at the Local

Our membership drive has launched. Now is the best time for new members to join. Do you have friends and colleagues who are not currently members of the AFM? Please help us to spread the word and encourage your fellow musicians to join. The more members we have, the more power we have to make life better for working musicians.

By now you've seen the warning about performing for South Florida Symphony. We've spoken to many musicians this month who performed for the orchestra last season and still have not been paid. We've been told that the orchestra is now looking for local musicians to perform for its November concerts. Please remember that there is no contract covering this engagement, and should you join the group of musicians that are owed wages, you may find yourself relying on small claims court or county wage theft ordinances to recover wages. Our recommendation is to steer clear.

We noted last month that members attending the September membership meeting voted to amend the wage scales and bylaws. Updated wage scale and bylaw booklets are now available at the Local and on the website. Please contact us if you would like a hard copy.

We recently spoke in support of the Fair Play Fair Pay Act. The AFM is lobbying for this legislation, which would give royalties to performers for terrestrial airplay (performers currently only receive royalties for satellite and Internet broadcasts, and the U.S. is one of only a handful of countries that do not have performer royalties for terrestrial radio). If you would like more information on this legislation, please let us know.

Last month we received calls from people looking for percussionists, keyboard players, and sitar players. Do we have your current promotional material on file? Are you listed in our referral program? Have you submitted your promo to afmentertainment.org? Ask us how we can help you get more gigs!
